In 2013, Wisdom Counselors (WC) LLC was initially established to address the need for business training and technical assistance for nonprofit organizations in Dallas, TX. According to a study conducted by Texas A&M University Bush School of Government & Public Service (2013), there are approximately 100,000 nonprofit organizations in the state of Texas. Of the 100,000, 70% are 501c(3) public charities. These organizations hold more than 180 billion in assets and reported more than 100 billion in revenue in 2012. Additionally, they employ more than 400,000 people, which equates to 3.8% of the total Texas workforce and 4.6% of the state's private workforce. This makes Texas nonprofit workforce the 5th largest nonprofit workforce in the nation. These employees earn approximately 16.8 billion in wages, equating to 1.6 billion in state and local tax revenues. At various times of the year spanning from 2009 to 2014, Texas nonprofits seem to employ more than the private sector and pay higher than the government (Galante & Zappone, 2015, para 3). Although these nonprofits appear to be doing well, 60% of these organizations report having an operating surplus, but no assets and less than 10% have assets over 1 million. The nonprofits in Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston metropolitan areas hold close to 60% of total assets in the state. This means that the nonprofits in the Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston regions contribute the most to Wisdom Counselors the Texas economy, yet majority of them have a sustainability issue. After diving deeper in the research, the nonprofits that suffered the most financially were the startups to medium sized organizations. To address this issue, C. Ja'net Chappelle (Founder & CEO) created a certificate specifically for startups. The certificate was originally offered through the Continuing Education Department at Richland College in Dallas, TX from 2013-2017. After piloting the certificate, C. Ja'net along with her business network members quickly discovered that these organizations needed more support; therefore, WC not only offers the traditional certificate, some of the new services include an online version of the certificate, grant writing and administration, and training and development. All of these services are for any business formation - nonprofit or for profit.
